Sister, this one might be harsh. It might be a message that you don’t want to hear or talk about. This message is not going to be the happiest, and you might feel uncomfortable reading this. But I need you to read until the end, because being convicted by the Holy Spirit is one of the first steps to being transformed by God.
If you’re a christian, you are probably familiar or have heard of being a “lukewarm christian”. Through my walk with Christ I have heard the saying before, but I don’t really remember ever being taught what it means.
So, what does it mean to be a lukewarm christian?
God explains it in the Bible. Revelation 3:15-16 says “‘I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot. Would that you were either cold or hot! 16 So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth.”
But what does it really look like to be a lukewarm christian? If you are lukewarm, your faith isn’t the most important thing in your life and you are not committed to growing in your faith. If your lukewarm, you claim to be christian but your life does not show that you are committed to Christ through your actions and words. If you are lukewarm, you follow more of what the world says and thinks of you rather than what Jesus Christ says and calls you to do.
I would say that if you are a follower of Christ there has definetly been a time where you have been in a lukewarm season at one point in time through your walk with Christ.
This past year I have truly stepped out of my comfort zone in sharing my faith with others, and gotten out of the “lukewarm” christian ways that were holding me back from growing with the Lord. I blocked out all of peoples opinions and truly made God the center of my life in everything I do. When I started doing this, and truly started living for the Lord and not for the approval of the world, is when I truly saw and felt my life change for the good.
Sometimes I feel we go through lukewarm seasons because it is simply easier to do the bare minimum. But, that is not what God calls us to do. Galatians 2:20 says “I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” When we surrender our life to God and give Him everything, it should be Him who lives in us and no longer us lives. When we walk around in public, meet new people, etc. they should be able to see Christ in us and want that same type of feeling and love.
God says if you are lukewarm, He is going to spit you out of His mouth… which means hell.
Now that we have talked about what it means to be a lukewarm christian, would you consider yourself one? What do you need to change about your life to stop living for the world and the approval of others, and truly surrender everything over to God?
PRAYER. Prayer is one of biggest steps toward being on fire for God and truly connecting and talking with Him. It is our communication with our Heavenly Father, and He wants to hear your prayers. Yes, He already knows everything that you are going through, but He wants you to communication and reach out to Him. Be intentional in prayer.
DEVOTE YOUR LIFE TO THE LORD. Fully commit yourself to God, and surrender everything over to Him. The small things, the big things, and even the in between things, Surrender is all over to Him, and watch your life truly change. Rejoice in every moment, even the bad, because God will work it out for the good and He holds everything in His hands.
READ AND CONNECT WITH GOD’S WORD. Reading and truly diving into scripture will help strengthen your relationship with the Lord in a powerful way, Find a quiet time routine that works for you, and make it a habit to do it daily and take this time to worship and connect with your Father.
You can do this. I believe in you.
Make Jesus your best friend. The one you run to always. This is when you will see your life change.
God will not give up on you, even if you are starting to give up on yourself, He is there and He will never leave your side. He wants you to pour out to Him and run to Him.
Getting out of the lukewarm phase is not an overnight thing, it will take time so don’t get frustrated or down on yourself. Keep pushing on, you can do it. It is also a really hard process, and you might even lose friendships through it and maybe even feel alone at times, but just know that in the end it will all be worth it and all work out for God’s glory.
